Legacy Windows Installation Instructions

For the traditional method, using 16d galvanized finish nails. Pre-drilling is recommended when temperature is below freezing.

  1. Make sure the rough opening is plumb, level, square, and ½" larger than the unit.
  2. Flash the opening per local requirements.
  3. From the outside, set the unit into the center of the opening and place a level on top of the window. Then, on the side that is high (or either side, if it is level), tack a nail 4" down from the top, on the side piece of brickmould. Do not drive the nails in fully.
  4. Raise the other side of the window to level, and tack the other side in the same location.
  5. Plumb one side and tack a nail 4" up from the bottom of either side.
  6. Check the window diagonally for square and adjust as necessary.
  7. When the window is square, plumb, and level, nail off the rest of the brickmould with nails approximately 12" apart.
  8. Shim the inside head, sill, checkrail, and under the sidejambs. Maintain an even margin between sash and frame. For units wider than 3', shim at the center of the sill and head as well.
  9. Check the window for smooth operation.
  10. Set the nails and fill the holes with a fast-drying putty, then lightly sand and touch-up with a matching paint.
  11. Installation is complete.

For Interior Strap Installation

  1. Make sure the rough opening is plumb, level, square, and ½" larger than the unit.
  2. Flash the opening per local requirements.
  3. From the inside, set the window in the center of the opening. Then cut the installation straps in the center and wrap them around the adjacent studs, nailing or stapling them with one (1) 1½" roofing tack or one (1) 1½" staple in each strap. Pull in on the straps as tightly as possible to insure the frame is in far enough to be flush with the dry wall or other interior covering.
  4. Level the sill and shim under the side jambs as needed.
  5. Plumb the window and shim at the head and sill. For units wider than 3', also shim at the center of the sill.
  6. Shim the frame at the checkrail, maintaining an even margin between the sash and frame.
  7. Check the window for smooth operation.
  8. Add at least two (2) more staples or nails to each strap.
  9. Using staples or nails, secure the shims by toe-nailing through the studs. This prevents the shims from falling out.
  10. Installation is complete.
